Abstract:

Funding retirement has become a major policy problem debated in governments and households worldwide. While many still think of retiring at age 65, most can now expect to live - and need income - for another quarter of their lives. The changing age distribution and character of the population, patterns of employment, and the integration of New Zealand into the world economy pose particular problems for those interested in ensuring adequate income for the retired. Richard Hawke outlines the issues surrounding retirement income and considers both practical and policy concerns. His examination includes an overview of worldwide trends in policy reform and highlights the benefits and shortfalls of various retirement arrangements. He compares compulsory retirement savings to models that allow individuals to take responsibility for their own retirement. In a specifically New Zealand context, he offers coherent suggestions for the future.
