The Italians in Australia is a revised edition of the book The Italians, first published in 1985 and based on the very successful Australian Broadcasting Commission television series by the same title. The revised book shares with the first edition the overall structure and, to a large extent, its contents and illustrations. The Table of Contents is basically identical with the exception of Chapter 6, which deals with the period of post-war mass migration, now redefined more correctly as 1945-1971.Given the continuing interest in the history of the Italian migrant experience in Australia, Cresciani's book fills a significant void since the other major anthological and systematic account of the presence of Ιtalians in Australia, Australia's Italians: Culture and Community in a Changing Society (Stephen Castles et al. eds, Sydney: Allen & Unwin, 1992) went out of print nearly a decade ago. Ιdeally, Cresciani's study should not only be of interest to the general public but should also serve as an important socio-historical tool for learning in secondary or tertiary institutions.
