Abstract:

Presents highlights of the industrial revolution in England. Shows how the industrial revolution was born of necessity as a growing population demanded more and more energy resources, goods, and services. Describes improvements in mining; development of new ways to process iron and other metals, leading to improvements in shipbuilding, bridge-making and architecture; development of the steam engine by Newcomen and Watt; the beginning of the manufacturing industry; and the invention of the railroad. Shows how these technological innovations opened the doors to the modern industrial era.
