Correspondence, accounts, receipts, ledgers, other business records, family records, legal papers, a weather calendar (1860-63), and other papers and records of various persons, firms, and institutions of Southside Virginia, particularly of Pittsylvania, Franklin, and Halifax counties, concerning hotels, land, railroads, schools, churches including the trial of Deacon John Dowdy for immorality, slavery, tobacco, politics, the Civil War including action at Staunton River Bridge, miscellaneous letters, an 1861 map of the Charleston, S. C. harbor, an undated map of the proposed map of the Saltville & Lebanon Railroad, and other aspects of economic and social life.

Includes records (2 v., 1790-1832) of the County Line Baptist Church in Pittsylvania County; letters and circulars (1790-1830) of the Pittsylvania County Clerk; Confederate post office accounts in Halifax County; records of the Barksdale (1780-1860), Holland (1830-80), Hubbard (1813-80), Martin, Overstreet (1783-1843), Spraggin (1810-50), and Watlington (1812-1814) families.
