Summary:	The article describes some recent metadata and resource discovery initiatives in the UK's Electronic Libraries Programme (eLib) and within the European Union's Fourth Framework Programme for research and technological development. A particular focus is the quality controlled, subject-based, information gateways within eLib, the ROADS project which supports them, and the large-scale Desire project within Europe.
