Abstract:

The collection contains two cabinet cards signed by Purvis. One is a portrait by F. Gutekunst, Philadelphia, with the handwritten note on the verso: "Robert Purvis, descended from an African woman, said to have been a princess of royal blood and an Englishman. He was one of the handsomest and most courtly men I ever met - K.M.A." The other is an oversized cabinet photograph by A.K.P. Trask, 1210 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, with the title: "This table and inkstand were used by the signers of the Declaration of the Anti-Slavery Convention, Philadelphia, December 6th, 1833, photographed...Dec. 6, 1888 on the 55th anniversary of the signing." The cabinet card in inscribed by Purvis, "To Miss K. M. Atkinson, with kind regards."
