Abstract:

The Cartographic Archive of the Rochambeau family consists of atlases and maps collected by three generations of the Rochambeau family beginning with the marquis de Rochambeau, documenting the military careers of his son and grandson from the Wars of Louis XIV through the Napoleonic Wars. The 565 maps and atlases were used by the Rochambeaus during campaigns in Europe, America, the West Indies, and Russia.

The archive is especially noteworthy for containing Rochambeau's field maps from the American Revolution. These include a manuscript atlas of French encampments on the march to Yorktown, drawn by Louis-Alexandre and Charles-Louis Berthier.

Other mapmakers represented include: Le Rouge, Johann Baptist Homann and his heirs, Eugène Henry Friex, Georges Friex, Alexis Hubert Jaillot, Pierre Gosse, Jr., Daniel Pinet, Matthaeus Seutter, Joshua Fry, Peter Jefferson, Bernard Roman, Cassini, Santini and Dezauche.
