Title from caption and first lines of text.
"Proposals for publishing an engraving of Mr. Bierstadt's picture of the Rocky Mountains. Mr. Bierstadt has made an arrangement with Mr. James Smillie to engrave, in line, his picture of the Rocky Mountains. ... The present engraving will be completed and ready for delivery during the summer of 1865."--p. . Followed by: Plan of publication.
Probably printed at New York in 1863, when arrangements were first made with Smillie to execute the engraving and it was anticipated that the work would be completed in two years. Later versions of the prospectus omitted the proposed date of completion, and the engraving was not actually finished until Dec. 1866. Cf. Anderson, N.K. Albert Bierstadt: art & enterprise, 1990, p. 272-273. Another copy, held by the New York Historical Society, is inscribed with the date Feb. 19th, 1864.
