Bell, Hilari ~ Rogue's Home ~ EOS, 2008 ~ 422 pages ~ tweens, teens, some adults.
"Most of the time, having a squire is a wonderful thing for a knight errant, but there are times when 'tis a cursed nuisance. Especially a squire such as Fisk, who notices too much."
This is the second novel in the "Knight and Rogue" series. Michael Sevenson is the Knight and Fisk is the rogue. The first volume was the Last Knight. While having read that volume will fill in some gaps, Rogue's Home may be read and understood as a stand-alone volume.
Refusing to fill the obligation assigned to him by his father, Michael is now an unredeemed with the tattoos on his marks that mark him as an outcast and one with virtually no legal rights. When Fisk receives a letter from his older sister asking him to come home immediately, a new adventure begins.
Sister Anna had married Max, an older man, who had made Fisk leave his home [Fish had a criminal past and perhaps future at that time]. Max was a judicar who sentenced two men to death by hanging. Later, it seemed that they were innocent and Max was removed from office and became a bit of an outcast. Anna wants Fisk to do the detective work that will prove that Max was innocent.
As Fisk and Michael begin to ask questions and follow the few tentative leads, arsonists burn buildings and Michael, vulnerable as an unredeemed is accused. Most of the story involves the detective work needed to identify who was behind Max's downfall and why. At the same time, Michael discovers what it means to be an unredeemed and whether he should reconsider his knightly ideals.
World-building is satisfactory, but not especially notable. The primary characters are nicely developed, especially the interactions between Fisk and Michael. Michael clearly grows as a person. Fisk seems much the same as before. The bag guy might have been more fully developed. There is some action, but this is more of a detective story than than an adventure one.
While this particular adventure is nicely wrapped up, the conclusion places the two companions on the road for another adventure.
Recommendation:
Bell, a former librarian, is a solid story-teller. The "Knight and the Rogue" series allows the two companions to grow in interesting ways as they interact with and learn from each other. A good choice for larger YA fantasy collections. Because of the detective puzzle aspect, this story has some cross-over appeal. Rogue's Home is easily read and the pages turn quickly. Cover art by Larry Rostant shows a burning torch with a city in the background. It's bright and dark and ties the story to the arson set fires.
