Abstract:

Collection consists of ca. forty-five letters to several correspondents (1856-1898), and one sketchbook (1847), with one document pertaining to Bonheur's estate (1899). Correspondents include the dealer Ernest Gambart (1898), Jules Claretie (1896), Mme. Fabien (1864-1869), Georges Petit (1863), Lefevre (1884, 1896), Camille Marcille (1869), Schainedland (1896), the Comtesse de Villelume-Sombreuil (1856), and Bonheur's dealer Benjamin Tedesco (1874-1891). The subjects of the letters are varied and include personal engagements, atelier visits, the purchase by Bonheur of drawings by Alfred Dedreux and Jules Dupre (Tedesco, 1888-1889), work on a painting for "the Empress" (Mme. Fabien, 1864), problems with a horse harness, the renting of a donkey and a cart (Mme. Sigura, n.d.), an exhibition for Petit, dues for the "Societe de l'Enseignement Professionel des Femmes," financial and practical matters and work in progress. In chronological order.

The sketchbook originally belonged to Raymond Bonheur, Rosa's father, whose name is written on the back free endpaper. It contains hand-written notes and drawings by him as well as by Rosa. It is suggested in the auction catalog for the sale of her estate (Galerie Georges Petit, 1900), that some of her drawings in the sketchbook probably date to 1844. The approximately 95 pages with drawing include studies of plants, animals, birds, landscapes, decorative objects, farm tools, farm workers and other human figures. Most are in pencil, two have added pen and ink, one is in ink and wash. A pencil study of a bird (wagtail) on leaf 15r has added watercolor.
