Abstract:

George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber collaborated on this 1927 comedy hit about an eminent and slightly eccentric theatrical clan. They're the Cavendishes, a Barrymore-like brood as flamboyant offstage as they are on. In their Manhattan apartment, three generations of the family are playing out a real-life drama: two of the Cavendish women may forsake the stage for marriage. Eva Gallienne is Fanny, the acting grande dame whose daughter (Rosemary Harris) and granddaughter may both be giving up the stage. Complicating the situation is the arrival of Fanny's son Tony, a matinee idol on the run from a breach of promise suit.
