Ruth Burnett is interviewed by Maria Brooks on August 6, 1982 in Fairbanks, Alaska. A former mayor of Fairbanks, Burnett discusses her childhood on a ranch in Montana; her mother's influence on her attitudes; economic hardships after her father's death; her education; and marriage. She talks about her political activism in Fairbanks and running for City Council; and her election as mayor, concerns for the borough, and goals in her administration (such as equal hiring practices in the Police Dept.). She also discusses a plan for a women's coalition--a network of women's organizations to support individuals and policies to advance women in Alaska.
