Abstract:

Investigates the feasibility of using the Sabbath as a theological framework for leadership formation. This study was undertaken as an exercise in practical theology, and a "mutual critical conversation" model was employed. The study produced a conversation between the biblical text, current leadership research, and the world of practice with the hope of developing an integrative theological model. Began with a historical, biblical, and theological investigation of the Sabbath in an attempt to show that it is best to understand the Sabbath theoretically and that it embodies the theological concepts of hope, worship, and rest. Relates the three thematic elements of the Sabbath to four important leadership principles. The eschatological character of the Sabbath rest is compared to the need for a future orientation by leaders; the worship and reflection that are a part of the Sabbath is linked to a leader's development of values and character; and the rest provided by the Sabbath was related to the need for balance in the life of a leader. Ended with an evaluation by peer review.
