They consist of a variety of financial records, including ledgers, journals, cash books, invoice registers, and inventories, as well as miscellaneous account and record books and two letterbooks.

Secondary companies represented are Bernard Pratte and Company; Pratte, Chouteau and Company; Chouteau and Sarpy; the St. Louis Missouri Fur Company; Wilson, Price and Hunt; the Pacific Fur Company (Astoria, Oregon); and Charles P. Chouteau and R. H. Cole; and the American Fur Company's Northern Department at Michilimackinac, including a letterbook of Ramsay Crooks and Robert Stuart. There are also personal records of Pierre Chouteau, Sr. and Jr.
