The collection consists of individual and group portraits, snapshots and candid shots of Heyward; his wife, Edwine; friends and acquaintances; and professional collegues from the music business. Also depicted are various social events and some views of Heyward performing at social gatherings, church concerts and for groups of children. The collection does not include views of his early life, his television and radio appearances, or his jazz, classical or folk music concert appearances.
Personal photographs include a candid shot of Heyward (ca. 1960s); a portrait of Edwine taken at a St. Emma Alumni gathering (1966); a series of individual and group snapshots of Heyward during the 1960s to 1970s; posing with unidentified groups of children (n.d.); at an outdoor gathering of the Community League of West 159th Street, Harlem (ca. 1960s); and at unidentified social gatherings (ca. 1970s). A large number of personal photographs are snapshots of friends, a wedding and a banquet; graduation portraits, possibly of his music students; and portraits of his music pupils from the 1950s to 1970s.
Images of Heyward's professional career include several undated studio portraits that may have been used for publicity purposes; a studio portrait of Heyward with his violin (ca. 1930s); a publicity photo which is inscribed by Gen "Sammy" (1945); a view of Heyward singing and playing guitar at an unidentified gathering which includes Langston Hughes (n.d.); views of Heyward singing and playing violin with the choir of an unidentified church; and views of him perfoming for school children (ca. 1960s). Snapshot and candid shots of Heyward performing at parties, a wedding reception and other social gatherings are not clearly identified as professional appearances, though he was often contracted for such events, either with his calypso group or as a solo act.
A large portion of the collection consists of studio portraits and publicity shots, many of which are inscribed, of Heyward's professional friends and colleagues. Among these include writer Langston Hughes, actress Juanita Hall, musician/composer W.C. Handy, folk singer/guitarist Opal Cooper (indentified here as Ole or O.D. Cooper), designer Vera Neumann, pianist Gene Rodgers, and calypso singer Massie Patterson, who collaborated with Heyward on his published songbook collections, including "Calypso Folk Sing" and "Great Songs of Christmas."
