This collection contains sixty-one letters written between 1870 and 1910 by American novelist Samuel Clemens and Karl Gerhardt (1875-1910), who was financially supported by Clemens to study in Paris. Topics include expenses of Gerhardt's education, commission from President Ulysses Grant, health, travel plans, lecture tours, unauthorized biographical publication, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Clemens' business matters, including the Paige Typesetting Machine. Their mutual friends, including Augustus St. Gaudens, John Quincy Adams Ward, and Charles Dudley Warner were also mentioned.
