Abstract:

Primarily a collection of original Savage prints, covering all periods of his career. Of the 838 photographs, over 750 are clearly Savage photographs. Eighteen other photographers are named, including one photograph by Alfred A. Hart, 1816-1908; Copelin & Melander, Chicago; Edward Martin, Salt Lake City; Silas Peter Melander, 1850-1929; Eadweard J. Muybridge, 1830-1904, San Francisco; Opp. Walker Bros., Salt Lake City; George W. Wilson, 1823-1893, Aberdeen; Charles A. Zimmerman, 1844-1909, and a possible Carleton E. Watkins photograph. There are also approximately 20 photographs where the photographer is unknown. The known photographers are from a variety of locations from California to Massachusetts to Pennsylvania and are noted in the inventory. The collection includes approximately 100 stereographs, 130 carte-de-visites, 100 cabinet, over 150 boudoir, 20 bookplate prints, three lantern slides, 250 various size prints mounted and/or framed, and 40 oversized photographs. The medium is predominately albumen with over 500 photographs, over 160 collodians, almost 120 gelatin, one albertype, 13 letterpress halftones, and nine calotypes. Landscapes predominate in the collection with over 560 prints. Salt Lake City, where Savage had his studio for 50 years, represents almost one-third of the landscapes with over 180; the Western United States (California being most prominent) contains almost one-third of the

landscapes with approximately 175; and Utah scenes include 165 photographs. Portraits, numbering over 220, include approximately 85 photographs of LDS Church leaders, especially numerous are Brigham Young photographs (approximately 30-often replicates in different size prints). There are thirteen Savage and Savage family photographs. Unfortunately over 65 portraits are of unknown subjects.
