Simple pencil illustrations and spare text show how lonely it is to be left out of the game. First a dog wishes that he could join and when he asks if he can play he makes new friends. Then a young boy is on the sidelines wishing that he could join and when he is asked he is able to make new friends. The lesson is clearly stated at the end that when someone is feeling left out and alone it doesn't take much to say hello. A nice addition to an SEL collection
A nice addition to any library.    (2009-11-11)
Simple yet poignant little book about the power of the word "hello" to change a lonely person into a friend. Good book to draw out responses from K-2 students about feeling lonely or how easy it can be to help someone become a new friend by just saying "hello".
