Genre/Form: Drawings
Named Person: William Shakespeare; William Shakespeare; William Shakespeare; William Shakespeare; William Shakespeare; William Shakespeare; Hamlet, (Legendary character); William Shakespeare; William Shakespeare; Gertrude, Queen of Denmark (Fictitious character); Hamlet, (Legendary character); William Shakespeare
Material Type: Graphic, Original artwork, Picture, Internet resource
Document Type: Visual material, Internet Resource
All Authors / Contributors: Coke Smyth
OCLC Number: 658218010
Notes: Artist: Coke Smyth is listed as exhibiting at the RA from 1842 to 1855. No Shakespearean subjects are noted. Christopher Wood notes him as a painter of figurative subjects who exhibited at BI, RA and SS. His full name was John Richard Coke Smyth though in some reference sources he has been erroneously listed as Frederick Coke Smith (see www.coke-smyth.com, biography of John Richard Coke Smyth).
Folger copies: both items are labeled on the recto of the backing as to play, act, scene and exact subject matter. Items are executed in dark tones of coloring and the faces are not well defined. There are numbers noted on the verso of both items, 2 on Hamlet and 11 on All's Well. Both items are signed in lower right corner. Hamlet measures 10 x 14 in. and All's well 8 1/2 x 12 in.
History: FSL has another painting which is quite similar to these two items in style but more refined in technique. This item was sold to the Folgers by John Anderson as being the work of J.M.W. Turner but has since been recataloged as anonymous. The painting illustrates the death of Juliet, ART Box S528rl no. 2.
Provenance: Drawings were purchased along with a number of other items on Shakespearean subjects by other artists, most by J.M. Wright. The Folgers bought this Shakespearean collection from Maggs Bros. in Dec. of 1922. Unfortunately the Maggs description of the three parcels of drawings is no longer found in the case file. (Formerly ART Inv. 286 no. 13,14).
Subject: The drawing of Hamlet is labeled Act II, Sc. IV and titled 'Hamlet makes a pass through the Arras'. Hamlet is pictured center and the queen is seated at right. A vague figure of Polonius can be seen behind the curtain at left. The drawing of All's well is labeled Act V, Sc. III and titled 'Lafeu and The King'. It pictures a man with white hair and beard seated center and writing. A man with a long red cape stands left of him and a woman stands behind the chair of the elder man and is glancing at the younger man in the red cape.
Description: 2 drawings : watercolor ; 255 x 355 mm. or smaller.
Responsibility: Coke Smyth.
