Abstract:

Interview with Scott Fulton about the Kiowa Five artist Stephen Mopope conducted by Arthur Silberman. Fulton discusses his interactions with Mopope in an Oklahoma City art gallery, which sold his work, in the 1950s and 1960s, with special emphasis on Mopope's personality, painting technique, opinions of younger Indian artists, the importance of artists interacting and commenting on each others work, and business interactions with the gallery. Fulton also states that Mopope said he wished he had been born 100 years earlier and had the opportunity to kill a buffalo with a spear. The telephone interview with Peggy Ostrander consists of Silberman attempting to get in touch with Jay Silverheels through Ostrander, apparently to ask some questions about Kiowa Five artist Jack Hokeah.
