| Notes: | Topographic map showing the MacKellar Islets in the vicinity of Cape Denision, the Australasian Antarctic Expedition's eastern base in Commonwealth Bay. What had happened was Mawson returned to the base later than he was expected, and he could see the Aurora sailing away on the horizon. He contacted them by radio and the ship turned around and headed back to his base. But the ice near the shore was already too thick and Captain Davis of the Aurora had no choice but to put a rescue party ashore and return immediately to Australia before it became trapped in the ice. Relief is shown by contours, heights and soundings in fathoms. |
