Abstract:

From the director of Tsunami: Seven Hours on Boxing Day, this epic documentary tells the story of the Berlin Wall through the experiences of those people living in the shadow of the secret police - the Stasi. When the Berlin Wall went up in 1961, East and West prepared for nuclear war. But in the lives of the millions who lived under its shadow, the Wall played a more sinister and intimate role. The Secret Life of the Berlin Wall tells the stories of the generation who grew up behind the Wall, determined to destroy it, and the secret police who would stop at nothing to prevent them. Crammed with unforgettable characters like Alfred, the Jew whose parents died at Auschwitz but who returned after the war to help build a socialist Utopia; Roland, the schoolboy jailed for five years for wearing a black pullover; and Gunther, the former head of the Stasi's department of dirty tricks, this film is delivered with pace and passion. Stories of courage, tragedy, love and betrayal combine to give an exciting vision of East German life in the build up to 9 November 1989 when one of history's greatest symbols of oppression was shattered forever into a million souvenirs.
