Abstract:

"In the Secret Way to War, Mark Danner examines in detail the record of decision-making revealed by the so-called Downing Street documents - a set of memoranda and reports, included here in full - that offer an inside view of members of Tony Blair's government and their American counterparts in Washington, as they struggle to come up with legal and political rationales for invading Iraq. These documents prove, writes Danner, that President Bush had decided on war eight months before invading, and only later choose, under British urging, to use the supposed threat from Saddam's weapons of mass destruction to justify it. The Secret Way to War describes how the documents, with "almost shocking clarity," tell of that deception - and how the US press and public, in large part, are managing not to listen."--Jacket.
