Joseph Caryl was a learned Nonconformist minister in London in the 1600s. He preached from the Book of Job for about 20 years and published 10 or 12 large volumes of commentary from his sermon notes. Charles Spurgeon observed that Caryl said much--but not too much, as his thoughts were warm and deep. But there may never have been anyone who read all of them in the small print. To be fair, though, Caryl cites many other scriptures throughout the Bible in his thoughtful expositions.
In the past century one publisher gave up trying to sell the complete set of commentary, but a Grand Rapids reprinter has recently made them available. But this reviewer was delighted to come across J.E. Rockwell's selections. In a slim little book that is hard to put down. J.E. Rockwell, D.D. cherry-picked Caryl's quotations very well. It should be of interest to ministers, but also to anyone who thinks deeply about why God allowed Job to suffer; but then extended his life and gave him twice as much as he had before.
