Abstract:

'The Seesaw Log' is the playwrights own account of what happened as his play was conceived, written, and brought to the Broadway stage. It is fraught with the tension between everyone involved, and their determination to "make the right compromise at the right time" in order to win the audience. The dynamics of winning an audience in the working theatre--professional, amateur, or academic--demands a word which connotes much more respect for all the individuals involved than the word compromise implies. There is dignity in the dynamics of change in a group art, and for all its melancholy, as a playwright Gibson understands this completely.
