Abstract:

This dissertation on isolationism in the United States focuses on William Langer, former governor of South Dakota (1933-1934, 1937-1939) and United States Congressman (1941-1959). Langer was against any international arrangement that committed the United States to a pre-defined position in foreign affairs, including Lend-Lease, the United Nations, the Marshall Plan, and NATO.
