Imaging waking up one morning at age fifty. You're a noted, published artist whose work hangs all over the world. Then imagine finding yourself standing in front of thirty-five inner city high school students, and you've never taught a day in your life. One of the first schools of children of freed slaves, Beach High School is an historical and proud place within the inner city of Savannah, Georgia. Famous athletes and politicians have walked its halls. For many years it was one of the lowest performing schools in the State of Georgia until Obama's Race to the Top Program dramatically turned it around, making national headline news. This is a story of beauty and ugliness, life and death, joy and sorrow, laughter and despair.
