Abstract:

Narrative entitled "The Sharpshooters," written by Luke Emerson Bicknell recounting his experiences with the 1st Company of Massachusetts Sharpshooters ("Andrew Sharpshooters"). The account was written in 1883 from diary entries kept, 1861-63, and provides details of Bicknell's tactics and skill as a sharpshooter. Bicknell describes serving with Capt. John Saunders; daily camp life; skirmishes in various parts of Virginia and Maryland including Ball's Bluff and Edwards Ferry, Va.; Siege of Yorktown, Va.; Battles of Fredericksburg, Malvern Hill and Chancellorsville, Va.; and his discharge following the Battle of Gettysburg, Pa. Narrative also includes copies of letters received by Bicknell sent by former sharpshooters assigned to separate regiments, 1863.
