This amazing shell handbook is perfect for beginner collectors. It describes 39 kinds of univalves (single shells), 14 kinds of bivalves (two shells), and many other specimens like star fish, sea horse, sea urchins, and more. There are color photos of about 300 specimens with scientific names. These shells are found south from Cape Cod to West Indies, Gulf States, Florida, Bahamas, and the Caribbean.
The author states that the best time to collect shells may be around new moon, at ebbing tide, but high tide can also often washes fragile shells ashore. Skin diving is another a good way to find shells. The shells under water that are not exposed to direct Sun and harsh elements are brilliant in color. The shells have aesthetic and intrinsic values, and some are rare and expensive, like conus gloriamaris (glory of the sea).
There is an interesting section in the book on how to clean the shells- naturally, with alcohol, with glycerin and water, and so on.
A fun book for those who love shells!
