Abstract:

"Randolph Keim accompanied General Sheridan in the field for six months during which time he observed all aspects of Army life during an Indian campaign. Although his attitudes toward the Indians reflect the Army point of view at this time, this report on his experience with troops, published in 1870, presents a fascinating look at the daily life of soldiers in the field, a highly informative view of headquarters operations, and a valuable picture of one of America's most able and colorful generals. Perhaps most interesting of all is the detailed account of the frontier Army on the march during a deadly Plains winter. 'Sheridan's troopers' provides an informative look at warfare on the western frontiers, and the Indian's futile attempts to cope with the U.S. troops"--Dust jacket.
