Abstract:

The package includes typescript of "Sherlock Holmes" play, with handwritten corrections and notes; 11 photographs of 1953 stage design, stage production team (Reginald Denham, director; Stewart Chaney, scenic designer, etc.), and stills from the play "Sherlock Holmes", starring Basil Rathbone (as Holmes) at Majestic Theatre, Boston; various correspondence addressed to Basil Rathbone from Vincent Starrett, Homer of Curran Productions, Robert C. Schieble, Eustace Seligman, George Somnes, Ethel Beckamn, Fred F. Finklehoffe, Howard Lindsay, Howard S. Cullman, Adrian M. Conan Doyle. All correspondence dated between 1951 to 1953 with regards to text of the play and play's production at Majestic Theatre and Broadway. Other correspondence also includes two letters addressed to Mrs. Basil Rathbone (i.e. Ouida Bergere Rathbone) from Irene Gillies and Joan & Robert Franklin, dated 1971 regarding possible stage production of the play. The set also includes 5 b&w drawings for 1953 stage design of the play; newspaper clippings from various newspapers, including New York Times, Cue, etc.; 1 post card; 2 theatre programmes dated 1953 ("The Playbill", and "On Stage") announcing the play's performance in Majestic Theatre and New Century Theatre; and the play's announcement from the producer Bill Doll.
