Abstract:

"The Show" takes place in the hip-hop world circa 1994-5. Black and white concert footage is interspersed with color scenes of life on a tour bus, in the studio, at the club, or in jail. Negotiations, concert promotions, publicity, and fan adoration are some of the topics addressed in candid interviews with the performers on the tour. Tour promoter Russell Simmons--the Brian Epstein/Berry Gordy/Bill Graham of rap--seems to relax while talking about the "industry," but snaps into business mode as soon as the cell rings. The film goes back and forth between the concert and documentary footage, illustrating both sides of life behind a microphone ... because in the ever-changing state of rap, the show never stops, even when the fans have left the stadium.
