A young man, Lars Holmstrand, who is planning on taking his own life is confronted one summer day by what seem to be mysterious people living out their own modern interpretations of the Finnish epic poem Kalevala. After several bizarre meetings, Lars is suddenly drawn inte the world of seeing and, after visiting several of his own parallel realities, into a supernatural battle between good and evil.
Even worse, a sinister figure and force from the beyond has discovered that Lars exists, forcing the once suicidal young man to take sides and actively fight the good fight for the future of Finland and ultimately mankind using his newly trained abilities as a seer.
The title "Siaren" or The Seer refers not only to what Lars is to become but to his teacher as well, an older figure out of the world of Kalevala who first encounters him and teaches him to use his gift for good. This was the fiction literature debut of Gunnar K. A. Njalsson and written in Swedish. The novel was nominated and among the four finalists for the City of Espoo Cultural Prize in Finland in 2000. Reviews of the book in Sweden and Finland were heated and ranged between the two extremes. Limited copies are to be found in the Nordic countries and at some major university libraries in Canada and the US.
The Finnish Kalevala Society has also integrated several copies into their national historical bibliography collection.
