Who would ever think that an astronomer would be a key player in the attempts to save the life of a mortally wounded President of the United States? Or that he would determine the elasticity of the Earth from its wobble on its axis? Or that he would write a science fiction book about an aircraft that could fly so high and fast that its wooden exterior would blaze like the space shuttle during re-entry? All of this and more, a century ago, in a nation considered by many as scientfically backward. I bet you won't be able to put it down until you finish reading it!
