Review of `Sir Humphry Davy, 1778-1978: a bicentenary remembrance' [Pamphlet] by W. A. Stinton, privately published in 1978.
Reviewer: Dr W. P. Palmer
This pamphlet is the text of a lecture given at the Royal Institution of Great Britain for the Library Group on 10th October 1978 and at Penzance for the Penworth District on 16th December 1978; it was published privately.
Much has been written about Sir Humphry Davy, for instance `Laughing gas and safety lamp: the story of Sir Humphry Davy', `Humphry Davy (Open University set book), `Humphry Davy: Science and Power (Cambridge Science Biographies), `The Wonders of Science: or Young Humphry Davy, `Humphry Davy on Geology: The 1805 Lectures for the General Audienceand `Humphrey Davy: poet and philosopher', so his life is well documented. This brief thirty page lecture concentrates on DAVY THE MAN, giving detail on his life as a child in Penzance, Cornwall and as a young man in Bristol, but only sketching in his scientific discoveries. It is somewhat of a hagiography, not mentioning his less than cordial relationship with Michael Faraday later in his career. Stinton even mis-spells Faraday as Farraday. A useful and well illustrated pamphlet, that gives exceptional provincial colour to Davy's early life.
