Abstract:

Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet, was a prolific and popular Scottish historical novelist and poet. Scott had an international career in his lifetime, but suffered a disastrous decline in status after WWI. However, he essentially invented the modern historical novel, while his Scottish novels assisted in the rehabilitation of English perception of Scotland and contributed to the reinvention of Scottish culture. Today Scott is seen as a key figure in the development of Scottish and world literature. This film uses contemporary drawings and paintings, portraits, maps, and other archival material to describe the social and historical background of his writing.
