"In this hour-long special, America's foremost film critics address a subject taken straight from today's headlines: media images of African Americans. Whoopi Goldberg, Spike Lee, John Singleton and Wesley Snipes talk with their hosts about the pressures of being African Americans in the film industry, and the sweetness of their triumphs, as well as their frustrations within the system. ... Siskel and Ebert's special on the New Black Cinema is a critical and comprehensive examination of where African Americans are today in the movies, and what lies ahead"--1992 Peabody Awards entry form excerpt.

Siskel and Ebert talk with Goldberg, Lee, Singleton, and Snipes about African-Americans in the movies and in the motion picture industry. They discuss who their childhood movie heroes were; childhood memories of movies; what the new black cinema is and the progression of African-Americans in the movies and the motion picture industry; what it is like being African-American in Hollywood and the discrimination and double standards they have encountered; white directors directing films about African-American persons; how the Los Angeles riots will effect African-Americans, African-American businesses, and African-Americans in the movie industry; and what is the future of African-Americans in the industry and what would each of them do if they were a studio chief. The program contains a large number of clips from a number of movies.
