Abstract:

This 50 minute documentary explores the astonishing claim by Yale Professor and jazz musician Willie Ruff that American Gospel music, along with virtually all other African American music styles including Jazz, Be-Bop, and the Blues have at their roots the musical traditions of white Scots. Willie Ruff argues that during the 17th and 18th centuries Scots emigrants came to the US looking for a better life and subsequently became slave owners. They imposed their language and religion on their slaves, who took the lining-out singing tradition of the Western Isles of Scotland and from that moulded their own form of worship. This, he says, has developed into the music we hear today. But not everybody agrees with this controversial theory. Scots singer and presenter Mary Ann Kennedy goes on an international journey to meet Willie and some of his critics and witnesses a ground breaking cultural experiment that puts Willie's theory to the acid test.
