Boz; George Cruikshank
|Notes:||Written by Charles Dickens, illustrations by George Cruikshank.
"Vizetelly, Branston and Co. printers, Fleet Street, London."--Verso of each title page.
Vol. 1: , iv, , 307, p., leaves of plates; v. 2: , 302, p., leaves of plates.
Description and collation correspond to that of the 3rd edition of the first series given in Podeschi, J.B. Dickens & Dickensiana (A3) except this copy does not have "Third Edition" on title pages, and v. 1 of this copy has a half title.
The illustrations of this copy consist of the 16 etchings of the first edition printed on a light brown background and hand-colored, with Cruikshank's signature at the foot of each etching, but with no titles or publisher's imprint on plate; these generally measure approx. 8 x 8 cm. Each of the 16 original etchings is also reworked and printed in black on a cream background in a slightly larger size, from 11 to 12 x 9 cm. In addition, each volume has five other plates, printed in black on cream background, not found in the first edition. Much of this illustration was undoubtedly added by a later binder; the original illustration of this copy is uncertain.
