Brief histories are given of the founding of schools for the deaf in New York State, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia. Other states which have founded schools are mentioned. Illustrations include a portrait of Laurent Clerc, the Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet memorial monument in Hartford, and the main buildings at the New York and Virginia institutions.
