Ella Fitzgerald can dance and sing even as a teenager. In 1930, jazz bands are everywhere; Ella earns some extra money by dancing and sees this as her way to become famous. Unfortunately Ella’s mother dies and Ella moves to her aunt’s home. Ella’s aunt provides little and Ella begins skipping school and eventually runs away. In 1934, Ella discovers an amateur night at the Apollo Theater but the night begins roughly as Ella appears in a raggedy dress and sings off-key. The emcee sees something special in Ella and gives her a second chance. She earns her first prize at another amateur night and a showcase for her talent. She receives another opportunity with an offer to sing in Chick Webb’s band. In spite of little glamour, Ella can sing and makes listeners want to dance. This early biography of Ella Fitzgerald conveys a nice sense of jazz as it uses lyrics from Ella’s songs. However, if one is not familiar with Ella’s life, it is difficult to get a clear sequence or the history where her life occurs. The illustrations fit nicely with the story and there is a good list of additional resources. Andrea Davis Pinkney’s biography may be a better introduction to Ella’s life for second and third grade readers while this title might follow.

By singing and dancing on the streets, Ella survived. Amateur Nights which provided the opportunity to sing with the Chick Webb band. The words and illustrations dance together with jazz jargon. The book is filled with determination and hope for a young raggedy girl who didn't give up. Resources at the end of book provide music, books, and on line information.
