This is a book of the life of Ella Fitzgerald from her childhood through age 21. She lost her mother at 14 and spent her time between family and friends and eventually winding up on the streets. Her love of dancing and singing became her way out when she began to make a name for herself singing in the clubs in Harlem. This is an excellent book for young readers showing them that determination and a love of performing can sometimes lead to great rewards, regardless of what others may say about you.
