This is an energetic picture book of the life of Ella Fitzgerald from her childhood through age 21. Orphaned at 14, Ella stayed with relatives, at an orphanage, then on the streets. By singing and dancing on the streets, Ella survived. Amateur Nights which provided the opportunity to sing with the Chick Webb band. The words and illustrations dance together with jazz jargon. The book is filled with determination and hope for a young raggedy girl who didn't give up. Resources at the end of book provide music, books, and on line information.
