Abstract:

Sleep-related complaints are common from patients in the primary care setting. Sleep apnea, insomnia, and excessive daytime somnolence have a combined prevalence rate of 20% to 50%. Moreover, sleep-related symptoms are often features of many psychiatric syndromes. Dr. Barthlen and Dr. Broch present an overview of sleep disorders with a particular emphasis on two common ones: sleep apnea and insomnia. In addition, they offer practical advice on when to refer patients to a sleep-wake disorders center as well as what patients can expect when being evaluated by a sleep specialist.
