Abstract:

Jo Slater is a great patron of the arts, and one of the grandest of New York's grandes dames. But things change when she ignores the warnings of her closest friends and takes a young French countess into her heart and home. By the time Jo discovers the truth about her mysterious guest, it is already too late. Abruptly dethroned and dispossessed--knocked from her pedestal by the treacherous young woman she befriended--Jo finds herself an unwanted visitor in the privileged world she once ruled. But she's not about to surrender her throne and her fortune so easily, reaching back into the eighteenth century to revive an elegant and ingenious scheme involving Marie Antoinette and the greatest swindle in history. But the ultimate success of her endeavors will require the most desperate of all measures: murder.
