Abstract:

The French Revolution was the product of wide and deep social tensions that developed in France during the second half of the eighteenth century. The revolutionary movement which began in 1787 therefore consisted of a number of separate but inter-related conflicts which eventually disrupted every aspect of society throughout the whole country. It was the intensity and variety of these divisions that raised the Revolution to a pitch of extreme violence and left France riddled with internal dissension that has lasted until the present day. This book analyzes the nature of these social conflicts, within their political framework. The course of events is described in sufficient detail to provide a background for readers without previous knowledge of the subject, while the particular attention devoted to provincial France and the author's exploitation of recent research offer unfamiliar evidence and controversial interpretations to the specialist. The result is both a picture of the supreme crisis in French society and an examination of social attitudes and aspirations whose influence has been felt in France and throughout the world from the time of the Revolution to the present. -- Back cover.
