As an avid library blogger, a regular technology columnist for American Libraries, and the so-called “Queen of Wikis,” Meredith Farkas is a well-known and highly respected figure in the library world. Her latest creation, Social Software in Libraries, is a comprehensive, well-written, and easy to understand guide to “Web 2.0” technologies, or tools that facilitate online communication, collaboration, syndication, and knowledge-sharing. The book covers a wide variety of some of the most popular social software applications, including blogs, RSS, wikis, photo-sharing communities, social networking sites, social bookmarking, virtual reference software, mobile Web, podcasting, screencasting, and gaming.
Each chapter features a description and evaluation of a particular tool, followed by a practical analysis of its application in all types of libraries. Farkas provides a number of interviews and useful real-world examples throughout the text, and also offers a companion Website where readers can access links to all of the examples, as well as lists of Farkas’ recently bookmarked resources. Social Software in Libraries is a timely, unique, and invaluable work that would be of use to Web 2.0 novices and mavens alike. It is highly recommended for librarians, library school students, and general audiences with an interest in emerging technologies.
