Abstract:

The cold war era competition between the United States and the Soviet Union gave way to scientific cooperation following the fall of communism in Russia. In 1995, the space shuttle Atlantis docked with the Russian-built space station Mir, the first such time that Russian and American astronauts worked together in space. The two nations, along with nine others, are currently combining forces to build the International Space Station.
