Files contain draft and printed speeches, interviews, and hearing transcripts. Venues include governmental hearings; conferences; businesses; professional, political, and community organizations; ceremonies; rallies; and banquets.
Series currently includes files from terms of Francis Sargent (1967-1969--formerly identified as scheduling files), Thomas O'Neill (1975-1983), and Evelyn Murphy (1987-1991). For speeches of Argeo Paul Cellucci (1991-1997) and Jane Swift (1999-2001) see among speeches of Gov. William Weld and Gov. Argeo Paul Cellucci respectively in: Massachusetts. Governor's Press Office. Speeches and testimonies ((M-Ar)10).
Sargent speeches, most in large print on note cards, are usually annotated, with event details and handwritten notes included. Most are arranged by date of event, although some event dates are unclear. Series also occasionally includes interview transcripts and articles written for publications. Topics covered include gun control, natural resources, urban crisis, Route 495, political trends, drug abuse, civil service, and the assassinations of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King Jr. Speeches were usually given to business and civic groups, including Republican organizations. Some lists of speeches by subject or date are included.
