Brotherton, Mike ~ Spider Star ~ TOR, 2008 ~ 448 pages ~ For adults, some teens.
"Two of the most important things ever to happen to Virginia Denton orccurred on the same day, almost at the same moment. At the time she was unaware of the importance of either event."
"The Spider Star is no star, and the Spider Star is no planet, but it is a place anyway, and its golden heart is the source of all good and evil. But mostly evil. For that which comes last, colors all that has come before." This is an Argonaut children's tale, but is at the heart of the story.
Humans have moved into space and human colonies exist on the planet Argo, in the Pollux system. where artifacts still remain from the previous non-human civilization called the Argonauts. A team of specialists exploring a nearby moon unknowingly trigger some sort of all-powerful ancient weapon that uses the sun to send terrible destructive forces against the moon and then the planet Argo itself. A selected team of explorers, anthropologists, and archaelogists sets forth to find the Spider Star and do whatever needs to be done to spare Argo from complete destruction. They hope to find Argonauts or at least whoever created the weapon for the Argonauts. Then they hope to discover how to prevent the weapon from destroying their planet.
The author is a Ph.D. astronomer so this is a hard science story with a variety of details to make the science aspects persuasive if not always clear to the lay reader. Besides the science involved with the voyage itself and the dark matter of the Spider Star, the story focuses on two major characters. Frank is a former distinguished space explorer who has left the service to be with his family. He has met and spent considerable time with an alien. Manuel is the specialist who accidently triggered the doomsday weapon. He will be the military leader on the voyage while Frank is to be the negotiator. Needless to say, there are tensions between the two and considerable space is given to their feelings, values, and attitudes.
While the trip to the Spider Star is relativey uneventful, things quickly fall apart once there. There are surprises, some action, and finally a possible resolution. The world-building on both Argo and the Spider Star are detailed and well done.
Recommendation:
Spider Star is a good blend of a space opera theme with considerable scientific context and explanation. Frank is an appealilng character and the various tensions and situations carry the story forward. It would have been better if the voyage part of the story had begun a bit earlier. Sometimes, the scientific explanations slow the pace of the story. Still, this is an interesting story and the reader is eager to learn more about the Spider Star and the spiders who may inhabit it. Recommended for larger SF collections, especially where there is an interest in hard science SF. Print is typical of a contemporary hard cover edition with no reading problems. Cover art by Daniel Dociu shows the threatening, fiery Spider Star. Title and image clearly indicate the genre and story type.
