"A witty, probing exploration of 'grass-roots' Communism, set on a construction site and centering on the conflict between a womanizing, tee-totalling Party secretary and a hard-drinking laborer. With its style reminiscent of a late western (complete with wide-screen duels!), laconic direction by the esteemed Beyer and casting of the popular Manfred Krug, the film was ear-marked for commercial success. Yet after only two screenings it was removed from theatres and its director sacked from the studio. The film, according to some had not grasped nor conveyed the moral strength of the Party. Originally banned for its perceived anti-establishment message, this DEFA masterpiece was shown to great acclaim after the unification of Germany."--Container.
